The Oklahoma City Thunder and Detroit Pistons opened the 2026-27 National Basketball Association season with 3-0 records. Both teams secured top spots in their respective conferences during the first week of play. The Thunder maintained their status as a Western Conference powerhouse, while the Pistons rose to the number one ranking in the East.

Oklahoma City led the league with a suffocating defense. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander helped limit star centers Victor Wembanyama and Nikola Jokic to a combined 6-of-32 shooting in opening games. The team recorded double-digit victories in its first three contests. The week ended on Sunday night with a serious leg injury to core forward Jalen Williams in a game against the Los Angeles Clippers.

Detroit Pistons head coach JB Bickerstaff guided his team to an unblemished start. Point guard Cade Cunningham posted 26 points and eight assists in a 106-93 road win over the Philadelphia 76ers. The Pistons managed their offense despite center Jalen Duren sitting out with a hamstring strain. Ausar Thompson and Paul Reed provided key contributions to the team's early success.

Several pre-season favorites struggled in the first seven days. The defending champion New York Knicks lost their first three games. Their week concluded with a fourth-quarter defeat to the Orlando Magic, with Franz Wagner leading the scoring. The Philadelphia 76ers debuted a new core featuring LeBron James, Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and Jaylen Brown. The team split its early games while working through lineup management.

The Houston Rockets and Minnesota Timberwolves also started 3-0. Houston relied on Fred VanVleet for distribution and Alperen Sengun for interior scoring. Amen Thompson recorded a game-winning block on Wembanyama to secure a victory for the Rockets. In Minnesota, Anthony Edwards led the Timberwolves in high-powered scoring games to anchor their position near the top of the Western Conference.

The first week of the season reshaped the league hierarchy. Undefeated starts for Oklahoma City, Detroit, Houston, and Minnesota created early momentum. Injuries and defensive performances altered the standings for the remaining teams. The NBA schedule continues as teams adjust to their new rosters and coaching strategies.
