The Tampa Bay Rays returned to St. Petersburg on Sunday trailing the Milwaukee Brewers two games to zero in the 2026 World Series. The visiting team ended both contests in Milwaukee with a runner on third base and no tying hit. The Rays must win at Tropicana Field to stay alive in the postseason.

In the first game, Trevor Megill retired the side with Jonny DeLuca on third base in the ninth inning. The second game saw the Rays surrender a four-run lead. The tying runner was again left at third base in the final inning. Manager Kevin Cash noted that the offense failed to connect in critical moments when the score was tight.

The team’s defensive unit, which was sharp during the regular season, must eliminate small errors against speed-oriented hitters like Jackson Chourio and Brice Turang. Clean fielding and accurate throws are required to prevent multi-run innings. The Rays also need to reduce distribution mistakes and maintain tight base-stealing coverage behind the pitching staff.

Starting pitchers must work at least five full innings to preserve the bullpen. Nick Martinez and Drew Rasmussen exited their starts in Milwaukee earlier than desired. Short outings forced high-leverage relievers Kevin Kelly, Cam Booser, and Tyler Wells to pitch in critical situations. Efficiency from the rotation is necessary to keep the late-inning bullpen fresh for matchups against Sal Frelick and William Contreras.

The lineup must generate timely contact from Yandy Diaz, Junior Caminero, and Jonathan Aranda. These players need to deliver situational hits with runners in scoring position. The team’s identity, which earned them the American League pennant, relies on speed and aggressive baserunning. Chandler Simpson must continue to create opportunities on the basepaths.

Cash plans to use aggressive bullpen management and pinch-hitting to leverage home-field advantage. The Rays face the Brewers again at Tropicana Field to begin their attempt at a series comeback.
