President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he is offering a $1 million reward to anyone who reports voter fraud that results in the arrest and conviction of the perpetrators. The payment applies to fraud in both upcoming elections and past ones. Trump posted the announcement on Truth Social, stating that the funds would be released upon the successful prosecution of those who created the fraud. A White House spokesperson referred reporters to the post and did not provide additional details on the program.

The president did not specify where the money for these payouts would come from. This ambiguity mirrors other recent financial promises Trump has made, such as a $25 million government fraud whistleblower program and $5,000 payments to Americans if Republicans maintain control of Congress. In each case, the administration has not clarified the funding source for the rewards.

Trump has long claimed that widespread voter fraud cost him the 2020 election, a narrative that persists despite a lack of evidence showing such fraud is common. While instances of voting irregularities do happen, such as people filling out ballots for deceased relatives or lying on mail ballot applications, they are typically caught and corrected. A tracker from the conservative Heritage Foundation has recorded more than 1,600 incidents of voter fraud over the last 40 years. This number represents a small fraction of the total votes cast during that period.

The offer is part of a broader push by the administration to influence the upcoming midterm elections. The Justice Department has dedicated resources to identifying noncitizens on state voter rolls. Studies indicate that noncitizen voting is rare, but the administration has taken legal action to enforce stricter rules. The department recently sued California officials to force the segregation of mail ballots allegedly sent to potential noncitizens. Additionally, the Justice Department sued Alaska officials at Trump’s request to prevent the certification of U.S. Senate race results if Republican Senator Dan Sullivan loses.

Courts have previously blocked Trump from implementing sweeping changes to mail voting and requiring documentary proof of citizenship to vote. The new reward program adds a financial incentive to the legal strategies the administration is employing. The timing of the announcement places it just weeks before the midterm elections, where the president is actively campaigning for Republican candidates.

The $1 million reward follows a $25 million whistleblower program Trump unveiled earlier this year. He told reporters that he would decide who was worthy of that specific prize. With the midterms approaching, the administration is layering financial incentives and legal challenges to shape the election process. The new bounty for voter fraud tips is the latest addition to this series of actions.
